After having a sift though all that I still have laying around I'm quite pleased to say not a lot has changed in its state of usability.<br />
<br />
The Parachute Deployment System is all still intact (apart from obviously needing a new battery) =D<br />
<br />
All of the Asymmetric splices will need rebinding with fibreglass tape in order to be used again as the adhesive has discoloured and given up on most of them. The splices will be re-pressure tested and has a thorough post test examination before being classed as usable again. I am however a little sceptical that they will come through, so in the mean time will start collecting new bottles to create splices with =)<br />
<br />
The Launch Pad is in exactly the same state as previously described a year or so ago so this is the first item to be sorted on the agenda.<br />
<br />
I must still glue in a bottle cap to the 15mm nozzle piece to create the new larger nozzle.<br />
<br />
I promise the next update will be a little more interesting with a few pictures this time =)<br />

Its been much too long since I've posted anything or made any progress with this hobby (or any of my hobbies for that matter!!) work and a few life hurdles threw themselves in my path over the past couple of years so for that I apologise.<br />

I am here to STAY this time =D!<br />

The plan for the next few weeks are to dig everything out and take a stock check of what is ok and what will need remaking or repairing.<br />
<br />
FIRST on the agenda after that is to get the adaptor piece for the launcher on the workshop floor and made either by me or if I don't have the time I will contract the piece out as a long enough wait has grown.<br />
<br />
I will make the promise of an update a week until no longer necessary, so watch this space =D<br />

I have already however made progress on the pressure delivery pipework for the launcher but can do no further work to it until the adaptor piece is made and the upright pipe soldered to it.<br />

I have been working on updating the launcher for a while now but only recently taken any action.</div>

<u>Couple of reasons for update:</u></div>

1. A more robust air delivery system within the launcher (In this case copper pipe in place of hosepipe).</div>

2. Interchangeable release heads for different size nozzles.</div>

3. Launcher base needs a re-paint in places of increased wear.</div>
<div>
4. Possible addition of a lever to make pulling the release head easier.</div>

5. Possible addition of guide rope secure points (Rather than pegging into ground)</div>

So first place to start, the strip down of the launcher, for now all I have taken off is the launch stanchion this is because the first problem to be solved is that of making the release heads interchangeable.</div>

The plan is to make an adapting piece that will sit atop the stanchion and have the 15mm copper tubing soldered into the bottom, then attaching the release head will use the quick connectors own threaded locking ring.</div>

Above pictures show the design breakdown and internal details of the piece to be made, this piece will allow us to swap between the large and small diameter nozzles very quickly with no tools required. I'm sorry if details given seem vague and do not give a great visualisation as to how exactly this piece will work but there's no easy way to explain it other than wait to see the finished piece.</div>

A few other bits and bobs I'm going to be getting on with in-between working on the launcher are, more parachutes (1x75cm, 2x100cm and 2x150cm), the recovery line accessories e.g. the shock cords and securing lines. Work has also begun in making a streamlined parachute pod but more on that at a later date as nothing will be able to be launched until the pads completion.</div>

As seen above we plan to make a more streamlined nose cone/deployment system for our rockets, this is something we hope to start on during the winter as well as some planned improvements to the launcher. </div>

The improvements made will be to allow us to change the release heads for larger or smaller nozzles however the case may be, this will be done with a permanently plumbed in copper tube system.</div>

PARACHUTES!!</div>

We have always used 2 small 20inch anti tangle chutes on our rockets these now however are much to small for the weight our rockets are gaining, therefore I have bought a large amount of thin Ripstop Nylon to make parachutes with. </div>

The plan is to make 2 of each sizes consisting of 75cm, 1m and 1.5m diameter parachutes. </div>

I finally got round to finishing three splices I had started almost the day after our last launch, all the splices have been pressure tested to 160PSI, 20PSI over there launch pressure and held there for 5 minutes before the pressure is released.<br />

Two of these are going to be put to immediate use to make Stratum I (6.8 Litre Rocket) as mentioned in a previous post this will be our first rocket to use tornado couplings. More splices now however will be produced as spares and backups in case of a CATO or Crash that may occur.<br />

Between me and the rest of the crew we have decided to not launch any of the Stratum assemblies until we have carried out a few further flights and feel comfortable with the Robinson coupled Nexus series.<br />

Waiting to launch Stratum will also give us chance to give jet foaming a go, something we've been meaning to try since the assembly of Nexus I nearly 2 years ago!!<br />

I decided its about time I got back into making some progress on my rockets, sorry for the long wait!<br />

I decided I'd start by remaking the In-line Deployment System which got heavily damaged during the last launch day due to a previously described (cough) mess up on my behalf. I decided to use the same design as previous but adding a few small alterations and strengthening features.<br />
<br />
The first and main feature I wanted to change was the way the top parachute bay Disk was held in, before I had relied entirely on the correx press fit to sit snugly in between one of the bottles formed ribs and a skewer poked through to hold it all in place.<br />
This method had the main problem that it would pop out due to the forces on launch, the only thing holding it still being the bamboo skewer which started to rip through the outer casing after the first launch even before the crash. Therefore this time it I have used sikaflex to glue it all in place giving it much more strength.<br />

Next up was the main internals, being the part that holds the timer and battery in place with room for a ballast capsule in the centre. Before this had been loosely taped to the lower mounting disk of the pod meaning it wobbled around a little in the casing, no biggie but I thought i may as well change it while the lot was being rebuilt, so it also was glued to the lower disk.<br />

The Nose Cone, now not that it had any major issues in regards to how it worked I had come across a few bits and pieces I wanted to change. One thing I had noticed during a few flights is when the rocket was recovered the PET spring in the Nose Cone hadn't actually sprung back, it would get caught compressed to one side of the inner walls, so i made the change by using 2 rubber bands and 2 correx squares glued together at opposite orientations as the pressure plate. This change adds a little weight but the reliability gain i feel I'll have is invaluable especially now bigger parachutes are going to be a requirement.<br />
The other small change to the Nose Cone is its size, its slightly larger then previous to accommodate larger parachutes.<br />

<br /></div><div>I have also Replaced the old o-ring on the nozzle we found the problem was in fact it was too big and was folding up to where we saw it as it was being placed on the launcher, this in turn was stopping it from locking down properly. It wasn't the seal that came with the nozzle piece when bought anyway so we'll blame that :) </div><div>

Nothing like a textbook flight to end a day.</li></ul><div><br /></div><div><b>Main Report</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>Overall we had our best flight day to date despite the odd hiccup, we originally didn't think we would fly due a thunderstorm which happily for us blew over.</div><div><br /></div><div>Once we had set up and gotten Nexus I filled up and on the pad we started pressurising we reached around 30psi and our launch abort valve popped apart, we thought at first we may have just not connected it properly first time round so we plugged it back in and reset. Unfortunately it happened again so we ended up detaching it from the pad leaving it dangling as we thought the expansion in the pressure line could be causing it to move. This solution worked for a time but when it came to Fracture II with its higher launch pressures the connector gave up on us again, luckily Butch had a spare connector which we could use for the time being. </div><div><br /></div><div>We are still unsure of the cause of this problem, the locking tabs appear to be completely undamaged and the locking sleeve is not any looser than before. On inspection of the scenario the launcher we decided was unstable and inadequate for further use, as it was the cause for the sudden arching over due to the release head being able to move around almost freely. Then turning to the recovery system failure on arrival to the landing site we discovered the parachutes were in fact stuck in the opening of the parachute bay, this lead us to redesigning the system mainly enlarging the door to the parachute bay. Also a new design for a launcher was created. To this day however the new system has not been flown, but has been extensively tested on the ground, also none of the Nexus series have been flown due to the wait its had on the recovery system.<br /><br />This update brings all our previous endeavours to light up to the present moment in time in which this blog was created. So i will say a massive thank you to my friends who started the hobby with me and help in the making of the rockets, the prep work for our field days and of course the launching of the rockets.
